Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) in 1804, the Piano Sonata No. 21, commonly known as the Waldstein, is one of Beethoven’s most notable sonatas during the middle period of his compositional output. The title Waldstein refers to Beethoven’s patron Count Ferdinand Ernst Gabriel von Waldstein for whom the work is dedicated. This virtuoso arrangement for two 5.0 octave marimbas by Kyle J. Maxwell-Doherty (b. 1986) highlights the well-known first movement of the sonata, the Allegro con brio.
